I'm getting a dependency problem on Groovy: Repast Simphony requires Groovy 1.1-beta-2, but I currently have 1.5.1.2.

How can I downgrade the version of Groovy, or how can I get the Repast Simphony plugin to use the latest Groovy?

Found the solution. In package explorer, click on the packages for which error messages occur (eg library references not found). Then right click on the offending error message in the Problems pane, and select "Quick Fix". This allows you to reattach to a different library version.

I also needed to fix an undefined REPAST_HOME variable the same way.

I had thought that I had updated instructions for installing with Repast but they didn't make it in. I am updating the setup instructions but briefly, instead of installing into the Eclipse environment itself, I suggest you unzip to a separate location and set the REPAST_HOME classpath and repast_home string substitution variables to that location. That way you can avoid any repast plugin dependency issues. You don't need groovy at all actually but as you note if you do try to have these all in the same plugin location you might have issues.

I'm having a problem that I think is related to getting these variables set right. I'm working through the tutorial and cannot make the repast version of prisoners dilemma work. When I attempt to run it I get a null pointer exception. Here is the error:

Yep, probably so -- as the Java builds that indicates that you probably have Repast installed as Eclipse plugins, but Eclipse still doesn't know where to find the runtime classes.
